Is Tithing a New Testament Command?

April 12, 2015 Preacher: Josh Black Series: Stand Alone Sermons

Sermon Questions
- What were you taught about giving or tithing growing up?
- Pastor Josh said the Old Testament prescribed three tithes: one annual tithe for the Levites, one annual tithe for the feasts, and another tithe for the poor every third year. If that’s correct, how does that change your view of tithing?
- Read Matthew 5:17. How does Christ’s “fulfillment” of the Law and Prophets (the whole Old Testament) affect the tithe commands?
- Pastor Josh said the two main things we’re to give to are ministers and the poor. How does this priority line up with your own giving?
- Pastor Josh listed four ways we’re to give: regularly, proportionately, voluntarily/cheerfully, and sacrificially. How do these principles challenge your giving?
- The foundational principle for New Testament giving is the gospel of Jesus Christ. How does the gospel motivate your giving?
- As you think of the main take away from this sermon consider two quotes. Don Carson says, "Instead of quibbling over percentages, we should ask, 'How can I manage my affairs so that I can give more?'" George Davis says, “Sacrificial giving is measured, not by what is given, but by what remains.” How do these quotes inform your response to the call to give?
